Iain married Cecilia Morton Kinross and took over the dwindling carriage works from his father-in-law William. The works at 39 Port Street became a motor garage and moved out to St.Ninians in the 1950s before finally closing in 1966.

The Port Street Showroom was sold to Marks & Spencer Limited in October 1956. The remaining works were sold in March 1967 when Marks & Spencer wanted to expand and are now incorporated into the Thistle Shopping Centre. The carriage showroom window is now the plate glass of Marks & Spencer.
As a comparison, this photograph of Port Street taken around 1900, shows tramcar no 5 heading off towards St Ninians with the carriageworks in the background. You can't stand in the middle of the road like that today. Photograph courtesy of the late Bob McCutcheon and his book
