Kinross Bent Sided Dog Cart

A Kinross bent sided Dog Cart was sold for £1,100 as Lot 55 in the Reading Carriage Sale on 3rd September 2003 by Thimbleby & Shorland, Auctioneers.  The description suggests that it was supplied under the Royal Warrant.

“BENT SIDED DOG CART by William Kinross & Sons of Stirling, dated August 1896, to suit 14-2 to 15-2 hh;  painted green and black, with cream shafts and grey cloth upholstery.  A fine quality country type cart by a leading builder which is thought to have been used on the Balmoral Estate, the hubs being marked ‘Makers to the Queen’, which is on good 16-spoke wheels.

This sturdy vehicle appeared in good order with just a small crack in the dashboard paintwork and possibly a split in the left hand shaft.  As a 2 wheeled vehicle designed to take extra passengers on the rear facing seat, when the rear door is let down as a footrest, it can be adjusted for balance.  The seats are mounted on rails so that they can be slid forwards and backwards and locked in place with pins.  Apparently it was sold from Balmoral to a Sussex collector who kept it undriven for a number of years before selling it on to a professional driver in the London area.  The rubber rimmed wheels were serviced by a wheelwright at Hampton Court, but are original.  They have a slightly thicker appearance than the other Kinross vehicles with 4 metal plates over the gaps in the felloes.  It is now owned by a very happy gentleman from Cork, Ireland who won a lot of history for his money.
